Beijing time on October 4, morning news, IBM researchers recently announced that have overcome a major challenge in the production of carbon nanotubes, which will help to produce a business competitiveness of carbon nanotube devices.
Over the past several decades, the semiconductor industry has tried to integrate more silicon transistors into a single chip computer chip, thereby enhancing the performance of the chip. However, this development will soon encounter physical limits. At present, IBM's researchers said that by virtue of the important project breakthrough, the future of carbon nanotube transistors to replace silicon transistors in the future will become a reality.
Carbon nanotubes have good electrical properties and thermal properties, which can be the basis of circuit theory, and bring faster speed and better energy efficiency. However, the production of commercial equipment based on carbon nanotube transistors is faced with multiple challenges in manufacturing. This time, IBM's researchers have solved one of the challenges: how to connect carbon nanotubes with metal contacts.
IBM's researchers changed the interface between 1 carbon nanotubes and 2 metal contacts. In the fabrication of carbon nanotube transistors, the conventional approach is to carry out the metal contacts on the carbon nanotubes. At present, IBM's researchers put metal contacts on the bottom of the carbon nanotubes by reacting to form different compounds. In this way, IBM's researchers have shown that the size of less than 10 nm of metal contacts will not affect the performance of carbon nanotubes. At present, the top of the silicon chip manufacturing process is 14 nm. )
Wilfred Hans (WilfriedHaensch), the head of the project research for IBM nanotubes, said the success of the new approach means that the current transfer to the carbon nanotube transistor will no longer depend on the length of the metal contacts. It is obvious that such a transistor can be small enough to achieve. IBM plans to prepare for the carbon nanotube technology before 2020, which is an important step.
However, Hans acknowledged that the commercial carbon nanotubes also exist other technical problems, and this work only solve one of the three major challenges facing commercial carbon nanotubes. Another challenge is that there are two forms of nanotubes: metals and semiconductors. Only semiconductor forms of nanotubes can be used for transistor. Therefore, engineers need to better separate metal nanotubes and semiconductor nanotubes. Another major challenge is the development of reliable non lithographic process, make billions of nanotubes arranged in a chip accurately.
